Meet your Admissions Counselor

Assumption's admissions team is excited to meet high school students looking to attend college. Each counselor travels to different parts of the country to meet with students and school counselors. Most of the time, the person you meet at a college fair or high school visit is the person who will read your application. Since you share so much with us throughout the admissions process, we thought we'd share a little bit about ourselves with you. Feel free to click on our names if you would like to email us.

 

Erik Abramson

Name: Erik Abramson
Title: Assistant Director of Admissions
Territory: New Hampshire, New York City, Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire Counties in Massachusetts, and Vermont
Where are you from? Deerfield, MA
Education: B.A. from Assumption College in Marketing
What inspired you to work with students? Before my senior year in college I worked as a summer ambassador and continued as a tour guide during the academic year. I really enjoyed meeting and working with students. I love learning about their goals and interests and showing students how Assumption can help them achieve those goals.
What is your favorite restaurant in Worcester? I love eating at Peppercorns on Park Ave.
Fun fact about yourself: I was a member of the Assumption College football team and one of the captains for the 2014 season.

Name: Michael DiPiazza
Title: Director of Admission and Recruitment
Territory: Long Island, NY and Tennessee
Where are you from?  I grew up in Albany, NY, but moved to Massachusetts via Long Island.
Education: Iona College, BA, MBA
What is your favorite thing about Assumption?  The Greyhound Chili is outrageously good, especially on a brisk Friday night at an AC football game!
What is your favorite sports team?  Born and raised New Yorker, let’s go Yankees!
What is your favorite restaurant in Worcester?  Not sure I can name just one. O’Connor’s has a great atmosphere.
Fun fact about yourself: I eat ice cream every night, and my favorite flavor is Turkey Hill Choco Mint Chip. 

Name: Shanell Cartagena

Where are you from?  Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

What is your favorite thing about Assumption?  Definitely the sense of community at Assumption. It doesn’t matter if it’s raining or shining outside you will always find someone that holds the door for you and offers you a smile.
What is your favorite sports team?  Boston Red Sox!
What is your favorite restaurant in Worcester?  It is difficult to choose just one, but I will go with Corner Grille on Pleasant Street.
Fun fact about yourself: I’ve lived in three countries, volunteered in four and worked in two!

Brother Richard Gagnon

Name: Bro. Richard Gagnon, AA

Where are you from? Born in Portland, Maine, and raised in Saco, Maine. I’m still a Mainer all the way, although I haven’t lived there for many years.
Education: B.A. from St. Francis College of the University of New England in Secondary Education and Foreign Languages
M.Ed. from Boston College in Education and Theology
Why did you choose to work at Assumption College? Assumption is the realization of our founder's dream for a Catholic university and continues to be sponsored by the Augustinians of the Assumption.  It is an important, motivating ministry for the entire order.
What is your favorite restaurant in Worcester? Since I love Italian food, I’ll say VIA.
Fun fact about yourself: As an Augustinian of the Assumption, I have lived in 5 different states and 2 foreign countries.

Name: Liam Hillery
Title: Admissions Counselor

Where are you from? Providence, Rhode Island
Education: Providence College, BA History/Secondary Education
What is your favorite sports team? Tottenham Hotspur. Always looking for an excuse to talk about the Premier League!
Why did you choose to work at Assumption College? My twin brother earned his BA from Assumption while competing on the men’s soccer team. I cheered most games with the Hound Pound. I’m so proud and impressed with the person he became after his four years at Assumption, and I know all the amazing things he’ll do in his life will be traced back to his time here. I chose Assumption because I believe in its community, education, and students it sends into the world. 
What's your favorite book? I think books speak to a person at different moments in their life. I really connected with Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture, by Douglas Coupland; The Dharma Bums, by Jack Kerouac; Less Than Zero, by Bret Easton Ellis; Hearts in Atlantis, by Stephen King; and Slaughterhouse-Five, by Kurt Vonnegut, to name just a few.
Fun fact about yourself: I’m lucky enough to have dual citizenship in the U.S. and Ireland.

Andrew Kupec

Name: Andrew Kupec
Title: Senior Assistant Director of Admissions
Territory: Connecticut (excluding Tolland, New London and Windham counties), Georgia, Florida and International territories
Where are you from? I am from Wyckoff, New Jersey, which is about a half hour outside of New York City.
Education: B.A. from Assumption College in Marketing, M.B.A. from Assumption College
Why did you choose to work at Assumption College? It is extremely rewarding to work for a place that I believe in, am passionate about and at which I had a tremendous experience.
What inspired you to work with students? I truly believe in the value of higher education.  I have witnessed and experienced the value of finding the “right fit” for college. I hope to help students have as rewarding of a college experience as I did.
What is your favorite sports team? Assumption College football is my biased answer (I used to be a quarterback for the team). For professional sports, it is dangerous to admit, but the New York Yankees.  
What is your favorite restaurant in Worcester? For a sit down dinner, I love The Sole Proprietor. If I need a quick lunch, I usually go to New England Roast Beef.
Fun fact about yourself:  I am a 2008 Assumption College Dodgeball Champion.

Why did you choose to work at Assumption College? Because of the highly qualified faculty that are extraordinarily committed to teaching, challenging and mentoring students.

What is your favorite restaurant in Worcester? People’s Kitchen
What is your favorite thing about Assumption? That it is located in a dynamic city and provides student to receive a liberal arts education but also provides numerous professional programs.
Fun fact about yourself: I have had the opportunity through work and with family to visit 16 different countries

Allyson Martin

Name: Allyson Martin

M.A. from Assumption College in Rehabilitation Counseling
Why did you want to work at Assumption College? I chose to work at Assumption because I believe that the liberal arts education offered to Assumption students prepares them well and in many cases opens the door to an array of interests and career opportunities that students may not have considered or even knew were a possibility.
What is your favorite thing about Assumption? I love that the Assumption pride and the sense of community can be felt throughout campus!
What is your favorite sports team? I love the New England Patriots!

Name: Christopher Miemiec

Where are you from? I grew up in Hebron, Connecticut.
Education: B.A. from Central Connecticut State University in Criminology
Why did you choose to work at Assumption College? I would say Assumption College chose me.  I can remember the first day I walked on campus, something just felt right.  The students on campus were so nice, and the faculty and staff were phenomenal.  I can definitely say that I look forward to coming into work every day.
What is your favorite sports team?  The Montreal Canadiens are my favorite sports team.  Montreal is an awesome city, and I try to go twice a year. Go Habs!
What is your favorite restaurant in Worcester?  Without a doubt, my favorite restaurant in Worcester is New England Roast Beef.  All the sandwiches there are really good.
Fun fact about yourself:  I used to coach the Youth Climbing Team at my local rock climbing gym while in college.

Brion Morro

Name: Brion Morro

What inspired you to work with students? In 11th grade I was fortunate enough to have a teacher who inspired me and truly became a mentor. He noticed that I had a passion for working with and tutoring younger students. He really motivated me to pursue a career in education.
What’s your favorite book? I really like Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls and The Things they Carried by Tim O’Brien.
What’s your favorite thing about Assumption? My favorite thing about Assumption is our students. Without them Assumption wouldn’t have the vibrant campus it does. I also think Pierre is the coolest mascot!

NameBeatriz (Bea) Patiño 
Title: Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Multicultural Recruitment
Territory: Plymouth County, Cape Cod & the Islands, California, Arizona, & Other
Where are you from? I’m originally from Chicago, Ill. I was raised in Central Falls, RI. I identify as a MexiRican American. My father is from Mexico City, Mexico and my mother is from San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico.
Education: B.A. from Connecticut College and an M.A. from Assumption in Counseling Psychology.
What inspired you to work with students? As a first generation college student from a low-income family and from a high school with a low graduation rate and an even lower college rate; college was not supposed to be in my future. However, I had always known that I wanted to go to college. I can vividly remember those that helped me get to college and those that made an impact on my experience in college and helped me get to where I am today. My passion in life is to lift and serve others especially to honor those who have done so for me. So, my hope is to help and inspire students as I was helped and inspired along the way.
What is your favorite restaurant in Worcester? Bocado, a Spanish tapas restaurant, because everything is delicious and since they are small plates you can order a lot and share it all.
Fun fact about yourself: I served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay, South American from 2001-2003.

Mike Perron

Name: Mike Perron

Where are you from?  Worcester, Massachusetts
Education: B.A. from Assumption College in Psychology
M.A. from Assumption College in Counseling Psychology
C.A.G.S. from Worcester State University in Educational Leadership and Administration
What inspired you to work with students? I began my career working as a guidance counselor and guidance director for more than 35 years. I have always had an interest in helping high school students think about and plan for their futures.
What is your favorite book? My favorite book is actually a trilogy written by Edmund Morris about Teddy Roosevelt’s life.  I like it because Roosevelt was a larger than life, fascinating, dynamic character and leader.
What is your favorite restaurant in Worcester? This is a tough one because there are many good restaurants in Worcester, but 111 Chop House, Café Nuevo, Sole Proprietor and O’Connors are my top choices.
Fun fact about yourself:  I am a charter member of Assumption College’s first football team (1967).

Susan Wynne

Name: Susan Wynne
Title: Regional Admissions Representative

Where are you from?  I grew up in Central Massachusetts and currently reside in Rhode Island.
Education: B.A. from Assumption College in Human Services and Rehabilitation Studies, M.A. from Assumption College in Rehabilitation Counseling
What inspired you to work with students?  Working with college-age students and their families is a perfect fit for me.  As the mother of two recent college grads as well as a college sophomore gives me a perspective which resonates with students and parents alike.  Helping students during this time of transition is very rewarding.
What is your favorite restaurant in Worcester?  There are so many to choose from in Worcester and the list keeps growing!  If I have to choose, it would be for seafood at The Sole Proprietor or for take-out, Ed Hyder’s Mediterranean Marketplace on Pleasant Street
